Spacers play a crucial role in maintaining the required cover for
reinforcement bars. Adequate cover is essential for the following
reasons:
- It protects the reinforcement from environmental exposure, reducing the risk of corrosion.
- It ensures sufficient bond between concrete and steel, enabling effective stress transfer.
- It enhances fire resistance by delaying the heating and softening of reinforcement during high-temperature conditions.
Plastic and concrete spacers often exhibit inadequate bonding with the
surrounding concrete. Furthermore, research conducted in Norway has
demonstrated that corrosion frequently initiates at spacer interfaces.
Concrete spacers shall not be made on construction site because:
